In addition to being a unique, beloved show in its own right, Cartoon Network's original Teen Titans animated series was incredibly popular with online shipping communities during its heyday. There were two ships in particular that grew rather large followings but couldn't co-exist in canon: one placing Robin in a monogamous relationship with Starfire and another pairing the Boy Wonder with Raven. This is the reason a romance between the two characters was canonized over the course of the animated series' five seasons and why the pairing had such a strong fanbase. The animated heroes grew close during the show, finally sharing their first kiss not counting the time Starfire kissed Robin to learn English when she first came to Earth in the television movie Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo, which bookended the series. That being said, Robin's other major ship started to gain significant traction among fans the previous year.

Robin and Raven are very close teammates and have a close bond, even in their minds. Raven openly says that Robin is the only one that understand her on their team, this is proven true as Robin has defended Raven numerous times from their teammates, who do not understand her and tells them that Raven is her own person and that they have to get used to how she is. They have saved each other numerous times and are very comfortable with each other as they have similar personalities.
