Sex Workers Outreach Project is a social justice network dedicated to ending violence and stigma against sex workers through education and advocacy. SWOP works to create a strong community of sex workers and allies to support each other and educate the public on the institutional harms committed against sex workers. Sex workers are seldom afforded protection or recourse from violence because of the precarious relationship between sex work and law enforcement. Violence against sex workers is tolerated because of the stigma and myths that surround the sex industry. Only when those falsehoods are corrected and sex workers are legitimized will we be able to effectively prevent and minimize the harsh challenges of sex work.

The power and positive change from moonlight clinics open with Beatrice Thom, 24, who joined Woza-Woza hot spot early last year, and mentions that the left side of her face was injured by a customer who refused pay after serving him. The quarrel broke out and the man used a broken glass bottle that gauged deep cuts on her face. Beatrice Thom nursing wounds in her room at Woza-Woza hot spot. Charity Ali, 24, a good friend to Beatrice claims that the benefits from FPAM organized mobile clinics are lifesaving. The condoms distributed per hot spot have raised confidence and safety of every female sex worker, including our customers. But currently, with support from FPAM, we have key personnel that we engage directly at the public facility. Her friendly approach to sex workers has helped to exceed the targets for service reach and HIV testing for the years — and she claims the figures are equally growing at a good pace.

Indeed, many of these organizations, such as Polaris Project cited in the article , as well as local organizations, like Purchased: Not For Sale, blur the lines between trafficking and sex work, resulting in a financial benefit to the organization but also creating an environment that is more dangerous for both sex workers and trafficking victims alike. While our organization certainly opposes human trafficking in all forms, we also focus on the empowerment of sex workers through public education, awareness, advocacy, leadership development, and peer support. Unfortunately, I was not contacted by anyone prior to your date of publication. Your article raised a number of concerns, some of which I will highlight here. My primary frustration is that when we conflate sex work with human trafficking, we are further muddying an already complex issue.
