Invasive ductal carcinoma treatment is designed to address cancer cells that initially form in a milk duct and then grow beyond the walls of the duct into the surrounding breast tissue. In many cases, surgery is recommended to remove the affected breast tissue and determine whether the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes. Additionally, to treat a large tumor measuring more than 1 centimeter in diameter or cancer that has spread beyond the breast tissue and lymph nodes, a physician might recommend a systemic treatment, such as chemotherapy or hormonal therapy, to destroy cancerous cells or shrink the tumor prior to surgery. To determine the best treatment approach, a physician will evaluate many factors, including the size and spread of the tumor s.

When your breast was biopsied, the samples taken were studied under the microscope by a specialized doctor with many years of training called a pathologist. The pathologist sends your doctor a report that gives a diagnosis for each sample taken. Information in this report will be used to help manage your care. The questions and answers that follow are meant to help you understand medical language you might find in the pathology report from a breast biopsy , such as a needle biopsy or an excision biopsy. In a needle biopsy, a needle is used to remove a sample of an abnormal area. An excision biopsy removes the entire abnormal area, often with some of the surrounding normal tissue. An excision biopsy is much like a type of breast-conserving surgery called a lumpectomy.

During a mammogram, you stand in front of an X-ray machine designed for mammography. A technician places your breast on a platform and positions the platform to match your height. The technician helps you position your head, arms and torso to allow an unobstructed view of your breast. A core needle biopsy uses a long, hollow tube to extract a sample of tissue. Here, a biopsy of a suspicious breast lump is being done.
It is fairly common for people to be diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Stage 2 tumors are usually between 2 and 5 centimeters cm in diameter 1 to 2. Radiation therapy is given following a lumpectomy, but may or may not be needed after a mastectomy. If the tumor is estrogen receptor-positive, hormonal therapy is usually given for five to 10 years, and for those who are postmenopausal, bisphosphonate therapy may be recommended as well to reduce the risk of recurrence. Stage 2 breast cancer is considered "invasive," meaning that cancer cells have broken out of the ducts or lobules of the breast.
