Gay rodeo in ca
On a fire-starting hot October day, filmmaker and photographer Luke Gilford sits on a bench in Southern California at Will Rogers State Park taking in acres of green and gold terrain as a horse whinnies behind him. The park is located just beyond the blue of the Pacific, down a dusty tree-lined Los Angeles County road. Here among the deep rolling hills is the one-time ranch of Will Rogers, a s and '30s Old West star who could make rope spin and dance in his hands. Before the Denver-born Gilford became a sought after photographer and filmmaker—he's shot shorts for Prada and Valentino, as well as portraits of celebrities like Jane Fonda, Pamela Anderson, and Lizzo—as a toddler, he spent a lot of time at rodeos. His return to the rodeo resulted in four years of traveling throughout Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and California to document rural queer life—and the radical acceptance and community he discovered within the IGRA.

The black-and-white photographs, in simple black frames, adorn the walls of a corner nook at the University of Idaho library in Moscow, Idaho, flanked by open shelves of books. In one, a lasso spins in the air, framing the face of the cowboy doing the twirling as he looks over his shoulder, brow furrowed; in another, the wild white eye of a bull stares squarely at the viewer, dust rising from its hooves as it tries to buck off its rider. A woman in jeans, bent in concentration, grabs the bar of a white metal gate; a square-jawed man, his neck taut, leans toward his companion, in a matching button-down shirt, for a kiss.
